Cornish cricket preview – 2022 season gets underway

Here we go again. The wickets have been prepared, the boundaries have been marked out and the whites have been washed. Cricket is back.

It all begins once again this weekend as a ball is bowled in anger for the first time in the 2022 Cornwall Cricket League season.

As is the modern tradition, the Premier Division sides get their campaigns underway with the Premier T20 Cup, with the ten top-tier sides playing four weeks of T20 double-headers to determine the four Finals Day participants, with the classic 50-over championship beginning in May.

Reigning T20 champions Callington begin the defence of their title with a double-header of games at Camborne, while last year’s beaten finalists and league champions Penzance make the short hop to local rivals St Just. Newly-promoted Hayle also face an opening-day derby, with a trip to Redruth in store for last year’s County Division 1 champions.

Grampound Road, relegated in 2021, begin life back in County 1 at home to Falmouth in what is set to be a very interesting match-up between two teams with designs on returning to the Premier Division as soon as possible. The newly-promoted duo of Callington 2 and Mullion begin second-tier life on home soil, hosting Lanhydrock and Paul respectively.

Division 2 also gets going on Saturday, with relegated St Austell 2 welcoming last year’s runners-up Wadebridge 2 to Wheal Eliza in the east division, while the west division sees last year’s Division 3 West top two, champions Camborne 2 and runners-up Barripper, renew rivalries at Barripper Playing Field.

There is also a smorgasbord of fixtures in the lower divisions, with Divisions 3, 4 and 5 all getting underway on Saturday.

We’ll be back on Monday with a round-up of the weekend’s events, before returning next Friday to look ahead to next week’s fixtures.
