Wadebridge 247-8 (50) beat Camborne 102 (33.2) by 145 runs
Wadebridge continued their bright start to the 2022 Cornwall Cricket League season with a 145-run victory at Camborne in the Premier Division, writes Matt Friday.
Opening batsman Kevin Renecke plundered 88 as the visitors posted a very handy 247-8, with Jacob MacDonald taking 4-45 for the home side.
Camborne struggled in their reply, with opener Matt Hewitt’s 28 as good as it got as the hosts were skittled out for 102.
The win moves Wadebridge above their opponents and up to third, level on points with second-placed Hayle, while Camborne slip to fifth.
After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Wadebridge opener Renecke quickly set about getting some early runs on the board, managing 16 before Sam Richards was dismissed for a duck and adding another eight before third batsman Matthew Robins fell in the same manner.
Renecke had more luck with Matthew Joliffe (33) as the duo put on 69 for the third wicket before the latter was stumped by Liam Weeks off Daniel Stephens’ ball, with Tom McLachlan (0) recording the third duck of the innings only three balls later with the visitors at 97-4.
But skipper James Turpin (45) stepped in and stepped up as he and Renecke put on 79 before the latter’s number was finally up on the 125th ball of his innings when he was caught by Gareth Mankee off Jacob MacDonald’s delivery.
With little more than seven overs left and the score at 176-5, the question now was whether Wadebridge could bring up the double ton. Kelvin Snell was the man to answer that one as the seventh batsman came in and hit a bright and breezy unbeaten 45 off 26 balls, finding the boundary eight times as the visitors posted an imposing 247-8.
Needing a good start in their response, Camborne got quite the opposite as opener Stephen Richards was bowled by James Turpin after managing two runs. Fellow opener Hewitt and Jake Symons (6) then put on an innings-best partnership of 21 until the latter was removed by Callum Wilson (2-29) for the second wicket as the hosts reached 28-2.
It was only downhill from there, however, with Robins catching Hewitt off Wilson’s ball before Simon Hosking’s (1) brief stay was ended by Sam Richards. Weeks nudged the home side past 50 before being caught by Joliffe, with Jamie Goldsworthy (3) departing only three balls later after becoming the second of Snell’s two victims (2-12) as Camborne laboured to 56-6.
MacDonald became the second player to post double figures, adding 12 to the now forlorn cause before Daniel Stephens made ten as the hosts looked to salvage some batting bonus points. Gareth Mankee added another ten alongside Ryan Downing (6) as the pair got their side’s tally into triple figures before Downing’s dismissal off Charlie Ellis’ delivery brought an end to proceedings.
