Gallery: Plymouth Argyle 1-0 Burton Albion

On a Home Park pitch bathed in early spring sunshine, in front of a delirious capacity crowd, Plymouth Argyle sealed their return to the second tier of English football after a 13-year absence.

With rivals Ipswich Town and Sheffield Wednesday on their way to comfortable victories, the Pilgrims needed three points to ensure promotion. On the stroke of half time, Niall Ennis (who else?) latched on to a through ball from Danny Mayor five yards inside the Burton half before jinking into the opponents’ penalty area and firing home the most important goal of this and many other seasons.

The second half passed in a blur, with a handful of chances for both sides. But 1-0 it remained until the referee’s whistle signalled ‘mission accomplished’ for a manager, a team and a club that has proved the doubters wrong time after time.

It’s official: The Greens are going up.
