Mousehole climb to second after five-goal win over Cadbury Heath

Mousehole continued their impressive streak in the Western League on Saturday, picking up a seventh consecutive victory after defeating Cadbury Heath 5-0 at Trungle Parc, writes Pablo Woolls-Blanco.

Mousehole entered the fixture with the knowledge that they could rise to second in the league on Saturday, but would have to improve on recent home performances against a Cadbury Heath side who they struggled against in early November.

The Seagulls were dominant from the first minute to the last at Trungle Parc, with goals from Mark Goldsworthy (2), Callam Mconie, Jack Calver and Hayden Turner enough for Jake Ash’s side to secure a deserved triumph on the day.

Despite struggling to start games well recently at home, no such troubles were evident against Cadbury Heath, with Jack Bray-Evans striking the inside of the post with just five minutes on the clock. In the 19th minute, Mousehole got their deserved opener, through Goldsworthy, who fired in the rebound of an effort from the edge of the area by Bray-Evans.

Just four minutes later, Mousehole had their second through Callam Mconie, who was picked out after some superb work down the left-hand side from Bray-Evans, before drilling the ball back across Jordan Schofield in goal to double Mousehole’s advantage.

Mousehole were hit by an injury blow just 10 minutes before half-time, as in-form forward Bray-Evans was forced off; replaced by youngster Jack Symons. Three minutes later, Mousehole had secured all three points, as another effort parried by Schofield was poked in by captain Jack Calver, who soon left the field with a head injury.

Mousehole’s relentless football continued into the second period, with Goldsworthy collecting his second goal of the game in the 52nd minute, and not long after he’d hit the woodwork too. This time, he was fantastically set-up by Symons who impressed off the bench for the Seagulls.

By now, Ash’s men were in full flow, coming extremely close to extending their advantage on numerous occasions as the second half progressed, with opportunities for Harry Bell, Adel Gafaiti, Kyle Fraser, and Josh Bissett. MOTM Goldsworthy also came agonisingly close to taking home the match ball.

Just when Mousehole looked as though they had settled for four, and as Cadbury Heath mustered up a few late chances, Turner was played through by Andrew Elcock, who was superb in midfield all afternoon for Mousehole, before cooly slotting the ball into the far corner, giving Mousehole five goals to go with a very impressive three points at home.

Following Bridgwater United’s 2-1 defeat away to Welton Rovers, Mousehole now climb to second in the table, and know that if they win their games in hand on first placed Saltash United, they will go top of the league.
